ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has agreed to contest a by-election or the general election, whichever is earlier, in order to become a member of the opposition in the National Assembly, a PPP leader told after a meeting of its parliamentarians in Islamabad.
PPP spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said a number of important issues were discussed at the meeting.
The spokesman said the PPP had decided to begin a “movement against the government” if four demands laid down by Mr Bhutto-Zardari regarding the Panamagate scam were not accepted by Dec 27.
“If the government does not meet our four demands we will be on the streets after Dec 27,” he said. “We will definitely build pressure on the government vis-à-vis the Panama Papers leaks concerning Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.”
In a separate meeting with party workers hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PPP chairman asked them to strengthen the hands of the new provincial set-up announced by him on Tuesday in order to meet the challenges that lay ahead.
“I stand with this organisation and ask everyone to support it unreservedly,” he said.
The PPP chairman said that he would undertake a tour of KP after the events in connection with the party’s founding day celebrations beginning on Nov 30 were over.
“I feel that the space for the PPP is growing in the province after the voters’ recent disillusionment with a party,” Mr Bhutto-Zardari said in a veiled reference to the Tehreek-i-Insaf.
