Members of Sindh Government’s Flood Team – Minister for Energy, Development & Planning, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Minister for Irrigation, Jam Khan Shoro, and Provincial Minister for Excise & Taxation, Mukesh Kumar Chawla – paid an emergency visit to Guddu Barrage to review the prevailing situation.
On this occasion, a super flood alert was issued, however, officials stated that water inflows are expected to remain lower than anticipated and the administration has been placed on full alert. Provincial Minister Nasir Hussain Shah said that even if rains continue, there is no major threat as all protective embankments are strong and water is expected to pass smoothly. He clarified, “Preparations for a super flood are complete and there is currently no immediate threat.”
He further said that the condition of embankments across Sindh is satisfactory and stable. He mentioned that extensive work has been carried out by the Irrigation Department at Qadirpur Low Bund, Nusrat Low Bund, Aqil Agani Bund, Ulera Jagir Bund, Kandhkot and Aghoshpur Bund, making their positions secure. Nasir Hussain Shah stated that a significant flow of water is expected this year and additional inflows may arrive on September 3 or 4. However, Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, has already directed ministers and elected representatives to remain present in their respective areas and monitor the arrangements.
He informed that “in the past, more than one million cusecs of water hav passed through Sukkur Barrage, and it can still pass through now. All institutions are on alert and keeping a close watch on the situation.” The Provincial Minister assured that if, God forbid, there is any emergency requiring evacuation of people from katcha (riverine) areas, their complete safety and care will be ensured. He emphasized, “We will not leave our brothers and sisters in katcha areas alone; they will be fully assisted and provided with all essential facilities.” According to Nasir Hussain Shah, the Chief Minister himself is supervising the arrangements, while all departments are fully prepared for relief and rescue operations.
Minister for Irrigation, Jam Khan Shoro, reassured the people of Sindh not to worry, stating that the government has made complete preparations to deal with floods. He said, “President Asif Ali Zardari, Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and the entire party leadership are monitoring the situation round the clock.” He added that in the coming days, the flood wave arriving from Punjab will enter Sindh through Guddu Barrage, with an estimated inflow of 700,000 to 800,000 cusecs of water. Provincial Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said that water inflows from Panjnad towards Guddu Barrage will recede, and the next 24 hours are critically important in terms of the situation. He said, “All necessary arrangements to deal with floods have been completed and the administration is fully mobilized.”
